Living in a first world country like the US, Europe, or Japan, we tend to think of bicycles as recreational vehicles...
but we forget, or never realize, that the vast majority of people that share the planet with us can't afford even the cheapest bicycle. And those that can get a hold of one, use it to make a living and to survive from day to day.
As recently as the early 1990's, it wasn't unusual to see whole families moving all their household posessions from one place to another on their bicycles. On more than one occasion I watched a Chinese fellow pedaling while balancing a good sized refrigerator on the rack behind his bicycle seat.
